Friday Five is ALIVE!
1. Do you live in a house, an apartment or a condo? We live in a 4-bedroom, 2-bath ranch-style house.
2. Do you rent or own? Own. woohoo!
3. Does anyone else live with you? My better half, two kids, four cats, one dog and a bunch of those damn ladybugs.
4. How many times have you moved in your life? 18-20, I'm not sure about my youngest years. We are not planning another move until after the kids are gone.
5. What are your plans for this weekend? VACATION, START OF VACATION!

Gotta get packing again!

Hey, Number99a@aol.com,

FYI, I did post the rest of your rant in a comment under the reception post, if you had bothered to SCROLL, you would have seen I also responded to you there. Just wondering, does it hurt to type with your striped panties in such a tight knot? I must have hit pretty darn close to home! teehee

For those interested, here is Commentor's e-mail to my previous post (my responses are in BOLD):
"Yes, I have raised 4 kids!!! (Should I be impressed? This is the Net, I don't believe much. You could be a Death-Row Inmate, who knows?) And they all know that judging others is Gods job not ours! (Spoken like a true convict...so you DON'T believe in the Court system?) They also learned that being kind is more important than being critical and selfish. (yeah yeah, yet another wannabe-reformed convict, find a PLAYGROUP!)

"I am not lacking 'parenting skills' here....you are! (tsk tsk...that is a judgment) You have a long way to go (another judgement, but *I* never claimed superior knowledge, did I?) and you would be smart (another judgment) to at least listen to someone that has been there (claims to be, but back to my convict theory) and not just be so one sided. (your side) (Nope, just one-sided YOUR way, right?)

“And you are raising your children to basically not care about their extended family by putting them (cousins) down and telling them how they should live! (I have NEVER told the cousins how to live, I have decided to not endorse this party and so has my husband.) How does this spread love? (I'm not cupid, stupid.) Rick cousin might want 'presence' in their life too, by sharing their happiness at their party! (The presence was requested with a direct PRESENT listed.) And just because YOU do not want to give them a gift of money is a sad way to extend your wishes to them......this is so shallow! (I NEVER said we wouldn't EVER give money, I said I'd asked about a registry, which there is none.)

“And, to use the excuse also that weddings are NOT a 'once in a lifetime' thing anymore is awful!! (So is your ignorance! Guess you don't know the high rate of remarriage?) What does this comment say about your marriage?? (Absolutely NOTHING, since I am a Second Wife.) That it isn't a 'once in a lifetime'. (Of course it's not, we could always have a tacky "second wedding" AKA renewal of vows.) Is this what you tell you daughter? (Nope, I'm honest, some people marry, some people don't; some people divorce and some don't. No biggie.)

“They didn't choose to have a wedding ceremony....remember? (Not true, they HAD their wedding ceremony, complete w/out the hassles of families and friends.)They eloped. Therefore they saved you some money! (Not true, we still have to spend money to attend the reception, bring food and stay overnight.) That seems to be so important to you! (Nah, I'm pretty bent about not being properly notified about hte nuptials BEFORE being asked to bring a dish, like it's MY responsibility to help put on THEIR party.) SO why not just go and share their day with some kindness ...... don't take a gift, Im sure they will understand. (Nope, we won't endorse their redneck wedding "bring food and money" reception for a wedding we cannot be sure even took place! We have similar party next month called a FAMILY REUNION.)

“Also why didn't you put my 'entire' comment on your web page??" Why don't you LOOK before your striped panties get all knotted? End of e-mail.

You know, you accuse ME of being judgmental, then proclaim it "God's job." YOU seem to be quite preachy and judgmental of me, which makes you a HYPOCRITE! Take your own advice! H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E! I bet you set similar wonderful examples for your kids when they were growing up. Proclaiming yourself equal to your own "God" seems like OOOOOOOLD hat to you. Hey, don't worry, I don't believe in YOUR pathetic idea of God, anyway.

My Comment section DOES work, so please don't bother to e-mail me with your rants again. I luv a good debate, but I can't stand amateurs who want a "playgroup." Wah wah. On my Blog, it's MY way. PERIOD!

Get yer own Blog! You are off mine now!

"And teaching your children that this is a nice to do to family just because you think so is wrong is very selfish of you."

I received this in a comment about the reception this weekend and it cracked me up. Does this person have kids?!!?

Teaching our kids what we believe is wrong is NOT selfish of us, it is called "PARENTING", instilling morals and values and etiquette, something MANY people, including the Commentor, seem to be lacking.

Should we teach our kids to be selfish toward their extended family? Hey, let's NOT deal with them being invited to your First Communion in May, they can just bring a dish to pass at your party in August! Yeah, let's do it! And let's include, "CASH IS APPRECIATED" in the invite, too!

Outrageous? Well, the Commentor didn't think so, if you go along the lines of, "It's their day!" (Gimme a break, it's not like weddings are "once in a lifetime," anymore!) It WAS their day, all that was required was THEM.

Nope, I think that is USING family in the ugliest way. I grew up with basically NO extended family, just my parents and siblings. I miss not having happy memories of weekend visits, holidays, phone calls, etc. It sucked. I didn't care about presents, I wanted PRESENCE! I wanted to hear, "I love you," "I miss you" and feel hugs and kisses. Our kids are being raised to appreciate CONTACT, not to expect CASH from family for their "happy days."

We believe that if you are going to a wedding reception, then you had damn well attend the wedding! We believe that if you are invited to a wedding shower, you had better be invited to the wedding! That IS what we teach our kids, no apologies.

Side note: When Rick's other cousin (who is the brother of this reception's cousin) was married, we drove 5+ hours (most others drove 8 hours) to attend the wedding and stayed overnight in the same hotel as the reception. The affair took place in the bride's hometown, but most of her family did not "bother" with the wedding, either. We think that is tacky and we owe it to our children to teach them. And, when Rick married his first wife (kind of an elopement, it was impromptu, with no friends or family knowing until after-the-fact), they lived in a different state and never did have a reception here, even when they visited and even though they sent out announcements.

I have my own thoughts on Elizabeth Smart. I have said all along this was orchestrated by someone close to the family, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out!
1. Living in a house on the market for $1.19 mill, why did the two girls share a room? That's pretty odd.
2. I am shocked to read today that there are 4 brothers and they were asleep in the house also, did I miss something? Are they older or younger? Any in debt or have a "habit"?
3. Why are we just NOW seeing a photo of her tennis shoes? I am sure the pajamas would change, but the shoes, NO.
4. Have they checked the school computer(s) that Elizabeth used? I know my nephews can download AOL IM at school and chat with me.
5. It's obvious that the Dad was a suspect because of his sex, but I have issues with that...how about Mom taking the lie-detector, too?

Tuesday, June 18, 2002

"NO...-N-O-...NO! We are NOT attending the damn reception!"

I have been wanting to scream this to Rick's Mom, who keeps asking, despite knowing our answer.

The upcoming weekend is the wedding reception for Rick's younger cousin who eloped last March. Personally, I think it is VERY tacky to have a picnic-type reception (some of us were e-mailed a request to bring a dish!) when you don't have the common decency to notify your family that you GOT married until they receive the invite 2 months later! C'mon, how about even a mass e-mail?

This isn't about bringing family together to celebrate a new member, it's "we got married, now give us money." They are NOT registered ANYWHERE and Rick's aunt included a CASH IS APPRECIATED note in the invites. Let's see...he is 28, a State graduate and an ENGINEER! Niehter has been married before, neither has kids and they have lived together for 2 years.

It's not that we don't like Rick's cousin and his wife, WE DO, but we feel like if they can't make an effort to do anything for more than themselves, then they sure shouldn't expect a damn thing from others!

Ahhhh...that rant felt good!

Last night, Simba's reaction to the thunderstorm overhead was a bit disconcerting. At first, he was all over us, whining and trying to sit on our laps. No biggie, this is his usual. He is terribly frightened of storms.

At its most intense, I had to use the bathroom. Simba followed me and stepped into our two-seated shower. Then he refused to come out. He stood, then sat, then stood, but would NOT come out for five minutes, despite our coaxing. We've never seen him do that before!

Ten minutes later, he went back in there on his own. I managed to get a photo, too. He stayed a few minutes, then came out and laid on my feet as the loud storm moved away.

This morning, he won't get in the shower stall. Last night's storm cover doesn't interest him now. Kinda freaky!

I admit, I am cheap and EZ.

I cut my own hair quite often (or I let Rick's mom), which really isn't a big deal because I know what I am doing (on myself.) It's not some intricate style, just snip-snip...snip-snip. Saves me quite a bit of money, too. I'm not fussy.

Friday afternoon, as I was packing up for the weekend jaunt, I got a wild hair to cut my hair. I did a basic trim real quick (like in less than 5 minutes), then called Karina in to help.

She was thrilled to be handed the scissors and allowed to trim the strays and straighten it out better. At first, she was a bit apprehensive, but she got into it and did a GREAT job! Cody was shocked, he couldn't believe I cut my hair myself, he couldn't believe I let Karina help and he was shocked at how nice it looked. Believe me, the child knows that stuff, it's his mother's training (salon trip at least once a week for hair and nails: he also can rattle off different types of manicures and color names.)

Rick's mom saw my short 'do yesterday and even commented on the "cute style." She was pretty darn impressed to know it was the work of Karina and me and NOT a salon.

As Karina was practicing her sign language on our drive today, she mentioned she might like to work in a salon. Even if it is just a blip on her career-wannabe screen, I know that little bit of trust I spontaneously gave her Friday afternoon meant more to her than I ever expected. The ensuing compliments are priceless.

I wonder if I will be able to afford her in 10 years?

Last fall, I bought quite a few pumpkins for seasonal decorations and proudly displayed them in my front yard. When they rotted, I didn't move them because I had heard they were a great natural fertilizer.

Now, I have 7 mini-pumpkin patches sprouting heartily in my front yard. The seeds flourished, despite being out in the elements!

My kids just cackled when I showed them, Rick snickered when I called him at work with the news last week. There is no transplanting them either, they are too far along, (plenty of sprouts, but no pumpkins) and the clay is too damn heavy!

On the bright side, I sure won't have to buy pumpkins to be holiday-festive this fall! That should save me $20-30. Heck, I probably won't even have to MOVE them, either!

On the less-than-bright side, I will probably NEVER live this one down!

YAY! Friday Five is UP!
1. How often do you do laundry? Nearly every freakin' day. In fact, I have a load in right now, with 2 more planned! Karina throws any piece of material that touches her skin for even a second in the dirty laundry with a wet towel on top and that is INSTA LOAD per day!
2. What's in a typical wash load? A typical load is clothes, sorted by whites, pastels, darks, Rick's work uniforms and towels.
3. Front or top loader? Powder or liquid detergent? Top loading machine right now. Rick insists upon liquid detergent, Tide for white and his uniforms, cheapO stuff for the others.
4. Do you use fabric softener in the rinse cycle? Nope, it's anal and a waste of $$ to me.
5. Dryer or clothesline? Gotta be the dryer.

I won't be able to go, but I hope the word gets passed around Atlanta and the rest of Georgia! Kudos to Q100 Atlanta! Shamelessly stolen from The Bert Show.

MASHA'S GRADUATION AT PHILIPS ARENA
Wednesday, June 19 -- 7:30pm -- EVERYONE INVITED (doors open at 6:30pm)

Masha lost the use of her legs in a car accident in 1999. Soon after the accident, Masha decided that she would still walk across the stage at her high school graduation .. NO MATTER WHAT! Only her mom, her doctors, and a teacher knew her plans.

After years of practice, she was finally able to walk the 15 feet with her braces and a walker, and practiced the walk on her graduation stage the afternoon before the ceremony.

Later that day, school principal Jim Markham decided that he didn't want Masha to attempt the walk. Markham asked 11 Alive reporter Jennifer Leslie that if "she fell in front of four or five thousand people that night ... What was it going to be like for her in terms of stress and humiliation and things of that nature?"

Masha told The Bert Show that she wasn't at all concerned about falling, and even if she had, she wouldn't have been humiliated.

We have decided to take matters into our own hands and make Masha's walk happen. With help from Philips Arena, we are going to throw Masha her own ceremony ... and you're invited!

We want as many people as possible to come out to Philips Arena on Wednesday to support Masha as she walks to get her diploma.

Please join us -- and bring as many friends as you can find! Masha deserves this, and we want to make Wednesday, June 19 the greatest day of her life!

CAN YOU HELP WITH MASHA'S GRADUATION?
We need to make it a perfect night!

In order to make Masha's night GREAT, we need the help of our listeners ...

Of course, we want as many people as possible to come to Philips Arena on Wednesday, June 19 for her graduation ceremony. (Doors open at 6:30, ceremony starts at 7:30.)

Also -- We need people to be a part of Masha's ceremony. If you are a 2002 graduate of Berkmar High School, wear your cap and gown to Philips on Wednesday. We might ask you to be in the procession.

We need help with other stuff, too!

Click 'Read More...' to see what we need. If you can help, e-mail Jeff@Q100Atlanta.com.

Thanks in advance ... and see you Wednesday.

It wasn't that I am a fan, but I cried last night after the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup. It wasn't that the victory was hard fought, the Wings deserved it, Detroit IS Hockeytown, yada-yada, etc.

I was the ONLY person in the crowded house to remember (and point out) that it was EXACTLY 5 years to the day, within hours, that the infamous Red Wing accident happened in Birmingham, just 6 days after they won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 42 years. WOW, did the room become momentarily quiet after that sobering reminder! Shock registered on more than a few faces, then the catastrophic incident was discussed.

And, last night, Vladimir Konstantinov, who suffered a severe closed-head injury in that one-car crash instantly ending his magnificent hockey career, was brought onto the ice with his old team during the celebration. His picture was taken along with the winning team, his hand holding onto the cup (his finger is in front of his face.) It really said a lot. Sure, the Wings positioned him in similar '98 winning team photo when they took the cup again, but it was still so fresh and expected. To do it last night, with the irony of the anniversary overlooked by the announcers, was, to say the least, AWESOME!

I don't know why exactly that accident affected me so much. I wasn't a Wings or hockey fan. Was it the fact that we owned limousines when I was growing up? Was it the fact that it happened on Woodward? Was it the fact that it was my parents wedding anniversary? I don't know. The Princess Diana tragedy had not yet happened, iCan had not been founded, so I cannot credit those, either.

Admittedly, I have never been a hockey fan (did I mention that?), but I can remember exactly where I was when I first heard about The Accident. Karina and I had just picked up Cody for the weekend and the three of us were on our way home. I was driving on I-75, it was announced on the radio (injuries not yet reported) and I just thought, "Oh, NO!" C'mon, they had just won the Stanley Cup championship (which was just a blip on my radar screen), it was supposed to be a time of celebration, not misfortune!

The kind of dedication and remembrance the Wings displayed last night was more poignant than I have ever seen with ANY type of professional team, no matter what the sport.

I wasn't looked at oddly for my tears, in fact, it wouldn't shock me if a few others were equally affected. Scotty Bowman, Steve Yzerman, Vladimir Konstantinov, Gordy Howe, the Wings and their fans, remember their team.

I still maintain that I am not a hockey fan. Maybe not, I was told last night, but I definitely AM a Wings TEAM fan.

Two years ago today, one of the greatest ladies I have ever had the privilege of knowing, passed away quietly during the night, reading her Bible.

Rick's gramma lived to be 86. I came along in the last five years of her life, but they were still very rich years for her. And me. The last time we saw Gramma alive was just 9 days before she died, Uncle Jer had a surprise 50th birthday party for Aunt Barb and I abosolutely insisted and guilt-tripped Rick into going with me and the kids. We all had a blast and our kids went over to Gramma and Grandpa's after (just for fun) with Mom and Dad. Rick has thanked me over and over since then. What was an inconvenience for a few moments has turned into sweet memories.

Gramma, like Grandpa, adored me, especially for making her grandson so happy. Gramma loved that I enveloped myself in her family: nearly every Christmas Day was spent over there, we NEVER missed a family reunion and we visited often. Our wedding three years earlier was the last time they traveled out of town for fun. After that, it was family medical emergency only.

Gramma raised 10 great kids. Gramma also took loving care of Grandpa's mom when she got too old, despite the fact that Gramma had been ridiculed and looked down upon for many years by her mother-in-law.

Gramma never really told me the secrets of her long and happy marriage, how to raise great kids, etc. She didn't need to, every moment was lesson enough. It's all work and all love, with liberal doses of luck and prayer, too.

I was lucky to know her and blessed to be loved by her.

I am a huge trivia buff, so I am always looking for great tidbits to give the kids, who eat them right up, too.

I love imaZine! Blog-hopping is fabulous!

I'd better blog before Lisa's hands start typing stalking messages!

Lisa is finally part of THE IN CROWD. She's got GLASSES! It's funny, she is the second gal in two days to admit they are ecstatic about being in the "spec crowd." Karina's friend positively gloated over her new shades, which they become in sunlight. Oh-lala!

Poor Karina, she wants sooooooo badly to wear glasses like everyone else in the family: Rick, Cody, me, all of her grandparents, many of her friends. She has 20/20 vision, but wishes for snazzy frames. She has literally cried about being "DIFFERENT." She doesn't fully comprehend, despite my numerous explanations, that her vision is PERFECT. She is LUCKY! That's NOT the way she sees it, though.

Lisa's eyewear comes 20 years after me, but 10 before her parents. I got mine in 5th grade, the first in my group. Unlike most kids, I was VERY excited. Why? Because my parents, to their credit, actually let ME pick out MY glasses! I still have them: blue-grey speckled plastic frames. Unbroken and the script is pretty darn close to now! I always took very good care of each of my pairs, but one broke when I went through a windshield during a car accident, another split right in half as I was washing them one day. I loved that pair.

I've never seen glasses as a PITA, they are my "fashion accessory." I will NEVER give them up, even if I won a free Lasek procedure! They hide my hooked nose and draw attention from my large teeth. No way, Jose! I love my glasses and when I was in school, I was often the first person to find out that so-n-so was getting glasses because they would want to talk to me and hear POSITIVE things, not negativity or teasing. I faced a bit of teasing at first, but it stopped almost immediately because I was no fun to tease. I loved my glasses so much that my fancy rubbed off to the other fascinated kids.

Welcome to the club, Lisa...and please refer to your glasses as a "fashion accessory" or "sexy specs." Cuz, believe me, they are!

P.S. Rick LOVES glasses on ladies. Aren't I lucky? teehee

Rick went fishing with a friend this morning at 5:30. I slept in until 8 a.m., but still managed to get a ton of stuff done before he arrived home at 4:30 (red as a lobster, too damn lazy to put on lotion!)...I finished mowing 1/2 of our acre with our PUSH mower, which completely dumbfounded Rick. Last night, I did the front and side lawns. I enjoy mowing AND it is GREAT exercise!

And, btwn my mowings, I read the second Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," while lazing in my porch swing.

Now, it's time for my walk with Simba!

FridayFive.org and Smattering.org haven't been up in several days, but I found these on the Redheads site. I wonder what is going on? Oh well, maybe I can get them this Friday.
1. What is your favorite thing about summer? Lazing around with the kids.
2. What is your favorite thing to do outdoors? Going with my dog and/or kids on walks.
3. Do you have a summer vacation planned? We are taking a week at the end of the month to "camper" around the state and Great Lakes. I really love Michigan!
4. What are some things you associate with summer? Yard work, BBQ, biking, bees, crickets, early sunrises and late sunsets.
5. Where and what was your best childhood summer? None, I HATED being away from school. I loved last summer - the first in our new house. It felt wonderful planting flowers and a garden, growing grass, mowing, building, the kids safely riding their bikes in our little village, etc. Our road was even paved! Yay!

Rick, Karina and I went yard-saling today in search of a good mountain bike for Karina. She has completely outgrown her 20" girls bike and keeps borrowing mine.

We went to one sale where the woman claimed they had just about everything, "My mother died and I got everything! This sale is ONLY her stuff...we have a full 40-foot semi-trailer in the backyard!" So, I asked if they had a bike. Yep, they did, but it was in the trailer. I asked if I might be able to see it, but the gal asked me what I would pay. I replied, "$25. Actually, it depends...Can I see it?"

I nearly fell over when she said, "Oh, forget it. This is a BRAND NEW HUFFY! I sure won't GIVE it to you! Have a nice day!"

I was in shock. This woman didn't want to even show me the bike. Pretty interesting, this woman was in her mid-to late- 40's and HER MOM had a brand new Huffy?

Happy ending...we visited another sale less than an hour later and bought Karina a 24",15-speed, girls Huffy mountain bike that was only used for a year (the girl is driving now.) It is in excellent condition and even has a pastel-swirled frame. She loves it.

I paid $10, no bartering.

I am happy to report that "The Remnant," the newest book in the Left Behind series, will be released on July 2. Yay!

I actually own the other nine, and devoured them once I got to reading, so I am eagerly anticipating book 10.

Now, if only J.K. Rowling would finish Harry Potter book #5, my kids would be just as excited!

Friday Five won't come up today, but I found these FF questions from last week over on Realm of Redheads. Thanks!
1. What is the one makeup item that you could not do without? Chapstick.
2. What do you think is your best facial feature, and what do you do to play it up? My cheeks, I wear flattering glasses.
3. If you only had time to do either your hair or your makeup, and you were going out in public, which would you choose? Hair.
4. What is the one beauty product you use that all the other girls simply must try? Chapstick
5. Guys, do you prefer women who wear visible makeup or women who go for the all-natural look? Rick much prefers no makeup, he dealt with a VERY high-maintenance woman and he jokes it was scary to wake up next to her most mornings. My makeup regimen is Chapstick, maybe once-in-a-great-while, lipstick. Nothing else, but glasses as my fashion accessory.

Just the other day, flipping through channels on the radio during my long drive home, I heard "Unanswered Prayers," by Garth Brooks and I realized that it happened to be my high school sweetheart's birthday, which was pretty funny.

I have lots of my own unanswered prayers from those days, and it is true, I am glad today for what I didn't get years ago. He was a great guy (tall, dark, handsome and a good Catholic boy, lol), who happened to be one of my best friends since 9th grade. After dating some real jerks (who were out of high school), I saw the "typical nice guy" that I was partners with in Spanish and loved to exchange notes with, as more than "just a friend." We dated our senior year, which pleased my parents and our group of friends, but infuriated his folks. We were actually engaged to be married (uh...that "date" is just days away, too, lol) for awhile after graduation. Ah, the teen years!

We had many great times and I credit him for teaching me what a nice guy was; unfortunately, I didn't believe I deserved a nice guy until many years later. Still, when I found Rick, I measured him up to my high school sweetheart and actually found that Rick was/is a NICER guy! Maybe it was because I had matured quite a bit, too?

I haven't spoken to him in years, but there are tidbits every now and then. I know it took me years to move on in my heart (my mother still hasn't tho, lol.), despite being in other relationships. I know, firsthand, this was mutual. Of course, there has been plenty of second-hand gossip, but I learned long ago to avoid that pratfall.

Yes, our breakup hurt then, we were supposed to be together FOREVER, but I am still grateful for my past because it has brought me to a wonderful present. Thankfully, I have known since 1995 that my prayers WERE answered.

Tuesday, June 04, 2002

Things have been crazy here, but finally seem to be settling down.

Rick has his job back (pay too), the guy who took over Monday AM couldn't hack it and took the demotion. There are no grudges against him from Rick either. It was a terrible thing for the company to do in the first place, it certainly was not to foster friendly feelings btwn coworkers!

Funny enough, there has been ALOT of male-bonding over the many grievances filed against the company with the union for breaches of contract. Close to 3 dozen in two days!

I am still exhausted from the chaotic weekend. I have a great tan, despite the sale falling far short of my expectations. There were so many blunders, from the sale being listed on the wrong day in one paper to the sale being listed in the wrong section (not garage sales) to a train blocking most of the accesses through town, forcing detours...UGH!

Tidbits:
1. I only have 3 more days of work, then I have no privacy for 2+ months, since I will have both kids for the summer.
2. Karina received several certificates at her honor awards last night...she has a 3.65 GPA. Cody is out of school already, YAY!
3. Rick is a wonderful man and I am lucky he loves me so much!

As I was getting ready to turn onto the freeway entrance this morning, I witnessed a near accident, which is not really uncommon, especially on a cold and rainy, manic Monday.

What was rather interesting, or unsettling, was the van in the next lane that was nearly hit the car in front of me.

In large letters on its side was the name of a local FUNERAL HOME.

I'm glad there was not a collision. I really don't want to know WHAT, if anything, might have been inside the cargo hold!

YIKES!
