REVIEW: "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" As a parent who loved the first four books and has seen both movies, I was quite eager for this new release. It was in my greedy paws before 9 a.m. Saturday.
Because of my almost-dying cat, it took me 3 days to finish the book.
JK started the book like every other: it was summer, Harry was being treated poorly by his aunt and uncle, a major incident occurred and Harry had to be rushed off immediately for protection.
This book seemed more like a soap opera, drawing heavily on the previous four editions and paving the way for books 6 & 7 to wrap up the series. Unfortunately, in this fifth-year novel, there were many times I just wanted to scream, "Ummm...NOT!"
It wasn't that Harry was acting more like a typical teen going through typical teen angst: nobody understands me, I'm so smart, his first girlfriend, etc. That was quite believable: hormones, fear, immortality, show-offishness, etc. Completely identifiable.
IMHO, too many shallow relationships were unplausibly blown up. Likewise, too many nuclear relationships were treated as shallow. There were too many Swiss cheese-type holes (events, people, etc.) that make no sense now, but may be explained later on...or maybe not.
It still seems that JK tried to disguise her writer's block with silly, short side-plots, like Harry's First Kiss and the whole Umbridge-Fudge-decrees and the PC events of Hermoine-knitting-clothes-to-free-the-house-elves. They were merely ridiculously, boring filler and not plot developments.
I was fully prepared for The Big Death That Made JK Sob. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! The character was far from pivotal to the entire storyline. In fact, I was rather relieved of the demise because of the potential for turning Harry to the "Dark Side" (sorry, a reference to Star Wars, lolol.)
Although my daughter completely disagrees with my opinion, I still hold that JK almost seems to be writing the books more on the aspect of them becoming movies, which is disappointing to see from such an interesting writer.
Overall, I would have to grade "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" a D+, with the major markdown coming from too many detached minor plots taking up too much space and poor character development. Sunshine - Walking on Sunshine -

Friday Five! 1. How are you planning to spend the summer [winter]? At home, assisting Gusto and spoiling my kids and animals.
2. What was your first summer job? Little Ceasars Pizza btwn my junior and senior years of high school. Unlike now, they were not air conditioned.
3. If you could go anywhere this summer [winter], where would you go? Any place my husband desired and promised it would get his mind off work!
4. What was your worst vacation ever? Because of the harsh feelings that persisted for years, I won't relive it here.
5. What was your best vacation ever? Despite the fact that Gramma died just days before we left, our 17-day jaunt down to Florida and the East Coast in 2000 was the best! In fact, that trip was exactly 3 years ago! My stepson had never been there...it was summer, we visited family and did LOTS of kid-fun stuff (like Kennedy and romping on the beaches of the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean.) We walked around D.C. and Savannah, went to the zoo and Juliette Gordon Lowe's home, ate lunch on Assatigue Island and spent a day showing my stepson where he was born and where they lived out there. Our kids LOVED it, too. Heck, my stepson just spent nearly a week in Vegas (first time) and had his first plane trip, but he wasn't impressed. Dakota made it through the night like a trooper, but he is bleeding again. He got down from our bed last night about 3 a.m. and walked about 30 feet to Simba's water dish and laid down. That leads me to believe he drank on his own! Still, I was up at 1 a.m. to feed him some water and at 5 a.m. to give him water and MilkPlus. Rick helped bathroom him, too.
Rick gave me the most pained look when I told him as he left, "Give Dakota a kiss, it may be the last time you ever see him."
I told Karina last night on the phone and she cried, too. She immediately wanted to come home, but I told her it would have to wait until this afternoon. And she balked when I said I wouldn't take her right back so she could see my nieces. She had a tough choice, because I made no bones that even if she came home, Dakota might not be here. It broke her heart, but she had to know the truth and SHE had to make the decision. She's nearly a teenager. It's time.

Dakota came home yesterday, but he probably isn't going to live. He has no will or strength left. He still won't eat or drink. He has the shakes. Our vet held hope that he would perk up once he got home, but we have a gut feeling that he just isn't going to make it. It hurts so much, I raised him from an abandoned baby kitty. If only I had gotten him to the vet sooner and not listened to Rick or depended on him...
My rash came back in full force yesterday. Same spot, same look. Weird.
I bought the new Harry Potter yesterday at Walmart for $16. I'm about half way through (page 428) and would have to say it sucks. J.K. writings, this time, seems too forced...like she put in each scattered idea that came to mind. Maybe that justifies to her the lateness and downplays writer's block. One woman, who has NO life, kept commenting nastily using different names, but I think she is under control now. Pretty sad, I even know her IRL! Final proof came with an innocent e-mail she sent a friend and I matched the IPs.

4. Do you let family, real life friends, or work colleagues read your blog? Why or why not? Yep, all the time! My boss started me with blogging in Sept. 2001, and I created a blog last year as a bday present for Lulu.

3 for Thursday 1. What are 3 things unique about you? I refuse to give up my glasses for Lasek, I love my grey hairs, I will admit when I am wrong and apologize, including to my children! (May sound stupid, but there are quite a few people out there who will never apologize or say they were wrong to ANY child, let alone their own!)
2. What are 3 funny/strange/wacky talents you have? Don't need an alarm clock; I can write legibly backward and forward with my left hand; I am an excellent detective.
3. What are 3 of your best traits? I am easy to please and don't need change; I am obsessed with gas mileage and oil consumption on our vehicles; I love our pets and give them lost of attention, like they are my kids.
BONUS: What is the most outlandish thing you’ve ever done? That would be up to others to decide:
a. I took my parents to court. And won.
b. I moved out on my long-time boyfriend one day, while he was at work and didn't even leave a note!

"The One" is far more powerful than Neo (Keanu Reeves) in "The Matrix."
"The One" has men and women falling for her left and right, but she is straight, ALWAYS has been, and has NEVER misrepresented herself.
Still, there is a psycho woman out there who is insisting that "The One" is not only gay, but also IN LOVE WITH HER! Psycho woman is in love with The One, despite being in her own long-term relationship with a wife!
Nothing "The One" says can ever convince the psycho woman otherwise. She rationalizes "The One's" straight relationships as "denial" of her true self..."gay-dar."
I used to pity the ridiculous woman (like all pathetic stalkers), but now, I think she has definitely crossed the line. She is trying to guilt-trip "The One" into believing her delusions. She lives in her own fantasy world.

Only 17 percent correctly said that none of the hijackers was Iraqi."
This perfectly describes Munchkin's social studies teacher, who completely blamed Saddam for Sept. 11 during our invasion of Iraq this past spring.
Hard to believe my parents have been married for 39 years! Proof positive that misery loves company!
- It has been 5 years since my relationship with my parents broke down, aka The Restaurant Episode from Hell.
- My oldest brother, the wah-wah-nobody-ever-gives-me-a-break-jailbird, is divorced after less than 4 years of marriage! Hard to imagine success with a quickie Vegas wedding moments after April Fool's Day ended...the same date as my dad's parents! FYI: My dad's dad committed suicide because my dad's mother was cheating on him. Big Bro should have chosen something in March!

This morning's major task was grocery shopping. Most days, it is a chore to head into town and I come home feeling drained and grumpy.
Not today!
Instead of heading toward Flint, I pointed my Jeep in the opposite direction, rolled my windows down and turned up the radio. The two stores on my itinerary are not huge chain stores. They are locally-owned and in a small town. I adore the quaint atmosphere, citizens wave and are patient, but with 4 sets of railroad tracks snaking through town, I guess they know plenty about slow!
Both grocery stores have friendly personnel...from cashiers to the meat cutters to the stockers. Everyone smiles. Conversations with cashiers are not, "That will be $38.22." They offer paper or plastic, ask if you found everything OK, hand out DumDum suckers (even to adults!) and ALWAYS tell you to have a nice day. It is quite obvious, because I have NEVER heard one complaint, that the workers must like their jobs!
Both stores offer paper or plastic sacks, I never have to ask. Neither has "cart corrals," and it is extremely rare to see a stray cart in the parking lot. Customers return carts inside without being asked. Like many others, I will see someone unloading their cart and ask if I can take it. Genuine pleasantries are always exchanged.
Actually, both stores have baggers who will load your groceries into your car! Most times, at one market, I have to stop the bagger from walking out with me! *I* am only 32 years old and my load is typically quite light!
It is refreshing to shop where you feel appreciated and not treated like another head in a cattle herd. It is nice to be waited on by cheery people and be included in conversations with the workers, not made to feel like you are interrupting their gossip/gripe sessions. The whole town is like that...the hardware, locally-owned pharmacy, Hallmark store, etc.

Friday Five 1. What's one thing you've always wanted to do, but never have? Stay home and ditch ALL my chores and just sleep, play, etc. as I want. I cannot neglect my duties, though, because nobody else will do them. The dogs need to go out and need to be fed/watered, the dishes need to be done, dinner must be cooked, etc. I am far from a control freak, too. My husband is like a child...he doesn't clean up after himself! Last Saturday, I was gone for 8 hours and came home to a kitchen from hell and dogs who had NO water, food left on plates, opened cans on the counters, dirty dishes everywhere. I had to clean up at 1 a.m. and actually had a dishwasher load from 2 people during the time I was gone! He had been asleep for hours. The next morning, he blamed Munchkin, "she should have known to clean up!" Whatever!!!
2. When someone asks your opinion about a new haircut/outfit/etc, are you always honest? Heck no, that's why I still have friends!
3. Have you ever found out something about a friend and then wished you hadn't? What happened? Can you believe the world kept turning!
4. If you could live in any fictional world (from a book/movie/game/etc.) which would it be and why? Hey, I thought we already lived in the Matrix!
5. What's one talent/skill you don't have but always wanted? I'm still trying to perfect the magic trick, "Saw a person in half."

2. What are 3 things about love that drives you nuts? Too many people seem hellbent on "romance" and too many people forget to evolve. Probably most disturbing is how many people, especially in bad relationships, refuse to accept responsibility for their choices "for love." It is my belief that people CHOOSE to love each other, and likewise, can choose to UNlove.
3. What are 3 things that you love about love? It can overwhelm you when you least expect it, it's never the same thing twice and, of course, DIRECT DEPOSIT! teehee
4. What are 3 things that family/friend love that is so great? Gusto loves writing, Lulu loves experiencing new things and Munchkin LOVES summer vacation (which starts today!)

1. "The Munsters" or "The Addams Family"? Munsters, growing up, I loved that gorgeous, blond Marilyn was the odd one! I really enjoyed the first two Addams movies with Christina Ricci, though.
2. "The Sopranos" or the "Godfather" movies? Yaaaaaaaaaawn.
3. "The Jetsons" or "Lost in Space"? I love the Lost in Space movie.
4. "Superman" or "Batman" (either the TV shows or the movies)? Batman. Chris Reeve was an awesome Superman, but Val and George played Batman, and despite the lame plots, makes them completely rewatchable!
5. "Sex & The City" or "Friends"? Sex in the City. I watched it BEFORE it was popular. I've tried to "get" Friends, but I can't.
6. "The Wizard of Oz" or the "Harry Potter" movies? Potter.
7. "The Simpsons" or "King of the Hill"? The Simpsons ROCK!
8. "Grease" or "Saturday Night Fever"? Neither, I was a fan.
9. Old prime-time soaps: "Dallas" or "Dynasty"? Again, not a fan of nighttime soaps.

It is amazing to realize how dumb some people can be about chatting on the Net.
My conversations are constantly peppered with "smilies" and the like: LOL, teehee, etc. This helps my chat partner, close friend or mere acquaintance, better gauge our talk, since typical facial expressions are not available.
Some people just refuse to use accepted Net language. I cannot fathom why...do they seem to think this is below them? Do they believe they can maintain their everyday "witty" personality with mere acquaintances?
News flash: IT DOESN'T WORK!
"Witty" often comes across as sarcastic and patronizing, at best, or incredibly stupid and rude, at the opposite end of the spectrum.
IRL, people smile and make other faces to show their feelings. Only very few, very talented people can deadpan conversations, even with their friends. It takes ALL participants to understand and approve conveyance of comedic efforts without expression. Sometimes, it works.
Most often IT DOES NOT and two people walk away from the conversation disappointed:
- the wannabe comedian who feels his/her efforts were unappreciated and
- the confused audience member who decides to not waste time on such an idiotic person again.
Deadpan humor while conversing on the Net with an acquaintance is a complete waste of time and energy...for BOTH parties! Sunshine - Walking on Sunshine -

2. What was/is so great about the person you love(d) the most? Direct deposit was my first smartass choice, but it probably should be that he was single and mature and ready to settle down when we met.
3. What qualities should a significant other have? Compassion, common sense, integrity, sense of humor, sense of responsibility, mechanical expertise and maturity are my top 7.
4. Have you ever broken someone's heart? Yep, I know of 3 or 4 times, the most recent in 1995. Two have never married and one, I know for sure, loves me more today, than any day in our live-in relationship. I am the one he put on his pedestal, but only after I left.

Most likely, we will be getting a new high school in a few years. I know *I* will be voting YES on our next millage! It is well worth it.
Fun bit of trivia...Munchkin will either be in the first graduating class in the new school, or even better, in the LAST graduating class of the current high school.
It is especially nifty for my father-in-law, since he was in the FIRST graduating class of the same high school, which Munchkin will be attending next year. He was first in, she may be last out. That is the stuff of newspaper features!
I am waiting to hear that Spike Lee is suing Carly Simon over her song, "You're So Vain"!
I would bet he thinks she wrote it about him!
Honestly, the guy is WHACKED! Maybe his momma needs to remind him that he isn't really "Spike," his real name is Shelton Jackson Lee.
Hate to break it to him, but his silly lawsuit over the Spike TV name is going to ruin his credibility. It may be difficult for him to believe, but Spike Lee is NOT in the news unless he is whining about racism.
Heck, right now on a Yahoo search of the word, "Spike," his profile on IMDB.com came up as #12, the highest mention of him. Dang, not even in the top 10! That's pretty humiliating for a guy trying to lay claim to the word, "spike"! (Side note: this blog comes up #1 on a Yahoo search of "walking on sunshine.")
And, judging from the lineup of the shows set for Spike TV, like "Miami Vice," "A-Team" and "Car and Driver Television," NOTHING could remotely be linked to him, except via "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon."
Please note: that game is NOT named, "Six Degrees of Spike Lee."

My husband re-fi'd the house yesterday at 5.5%, which is a great rate for a manufactured house! (Most lenders won't finance them, even on private land, like us.)
We may lose the PMI and our total savings each month will be nearly $400!
This-or-That: Animals 1. Cats or dogs? Once upon a time, there would have been NO hesitation...DOGS! Now, though, I love cats, too, but with Sim, my fluffy, sweet dog, I still prefer the barkers.
2. Butterflies or birds? Birds. Butterflies come from caterpillars, YUCK!

7. Elephants or mice? Elephants. Mice and their cousins (hamsters, rats, etc.) are icky.
8. Porcupines or aardvarks? Aardvarks. They are so ugly, they are cute!
9. Unicorns or dragons? Unicorns. I know too many people who remind me of dragons. teehee
10. Thought-provoking question of the week: You live in a rather dumpy apartment. A friend offers you a chance to be a roommate at a new place s/he is moving into, but they don't allow pets. You have a pet. Do you find your pet a new home and take the new place, or do you keep your pet and stay put? Stay put. After being on my own, then married, I know I could not just "room" with a buddy. I like my privacy. And on the topic, I love my pets very much, so I wouldn't just dump them. Funniest happening all weekend: My husband's X brought up and actually INSISTED that he attend his 20-year class reunion. She then lectured me about him NEEDING to go to it to see everyone again. My husband isn't interested in it and I respect his decision.
Not her!
My husband seemed really confused about why she even cares. It's not like it is her reunion, that is next year. She doesn't even live in the same town!
I actually had to remind him...she obviously wants him to attend because her FIRST exhusband graduated in that class, too. It's not like she was popular, or even well-liked. All she has ever done is gripe about the small town and as we stood in the store the other night, she cut down several people, the very same people she desperately wants my husband to go socialize with for a weekend?
