Tidbits of gossip
Not enough time to blog about our LONG weekend, so here are a few tidbits of gossip.
1. My nephew took in more than $2,400 for his high school graduation. woohoo! He got a job at a tool-n-die shop, instead of going right to college. He's not sure what he is interested in doing, but I think he is leaning toward machinery or farming. And I finally met my nephew's mother and her creepy, asshat husband! NOT what I expected. I wasn't impressed, especially since she isn't too fond of my husband.
2. Hubby's X is having MAJOR problems with her gastric-bypass procedure. As I have said before and it is documented on the Web, she has not changed her diet as mandated. Now, she is pretty much bulimic...what goes down, comes back up. Her doctor has told her she needs to exercise (my stepson said she has no muscle tone) and EAT as instructed, which means NO sugar, NO caffeine and NO junk. She has an appt with a lawyer this week.
3. There are HUGE issues, mainly concerning money, btwn hubby's brothers. Older brother's wife received a LARGE medical malpractice and disability settlement several years ago. They spent a lot of it on big ticket items, like a camper, two convertibles, home improvements, extended vacations, etc. Younger brother's wife, Ley, had a baby 4 years ago and cannot keep up with them, so there is a quite bit of jealousy. In his defense, older brother's wife, Jo, is very much a show-off and has forgotten that she hasn't always been so "well-off." I can see both sides...the 4 of them were quite tight before the baby and before the settlement.

Funny thing is, Jo told me that her financial windfall is nearly gone and she may HAVE to get a job, if her current babysitting gig is lost. Unfortunately, because of her disability settlement, she has to watch what positions she applies for!
4. I learned many great tips and tricks for our kids' graduation parties! In fact, Jo has accepted my offer to wear an apron with MANAGER on it and whip the preparations into place. I will happily be a worker ant for her expertise!

Iraq: the shame of our nation
President Bush is no different than Saddam Hussein. Bush is no savior for the Iraqi people. He is behind the abuse and slaughter of thousands of innocent Iraqi men, women and children.

For ignorant, asshat racists who believe that all Iraqis are terrorists and deserve what they get, that is like saying all white men deserve to be punished for fellow white-boy Jeffrey Dahmer's serial killing. Or Ted Bundy.

Or believing that everyone living in Detroit is a murderer or on welfare.

To justify the abuse and killing of Iraqis because American soldiers and entrepreneurs have been murdered by Iraqis, IMHO, would be as brainless as insisting that ALL Michiganders need to be held responsible for the terrible 1995 Oklahoma City bombing by fellow Michiganders, Terry Nichols and Timothy McVeigh.

Oh yeah, I forgot...it is somehow rationaled by many gullible Americans as OK that the US slaughters/murders innocent Iraqis because we are supposedly "giving them freedom."

NOT!!!

Adopted once more
Last evening, just before the storms started rolling through again, our family was outside doing various tasks. I was setting up the camper for our trip North this weekend for my nephew's graduation.

I heard my husband say, "Go see momma, she likes puppies!"

Oh, I thought, Cookie must be visiting! Cookie is the silly dog from next door.

I walked down the steps to find a large chocolate lab wagging his tail at me. He wore a collar, but it didn't have any tags.

Immediately, he was given food and water, but he wasn't interested in the food.

The rain began to pour down, so we took him inside, where he lay down and slept well. He isn't bothered by cats, he doesn't even try to chase them. Like Simba, he will even share his food without growling! Unlike Simba, he didn't freak out over the storms.

The cats, except Schnotz, are wary of him. Princess isn't as bad as the rest of my 'fraidy cats. Still, they seem to accept him more than they ever did Juno.

We are going to do our best to find his rightful owner, just like we did with Bianca years ago. He's a very well-trained, friendly dog and doesn't seem like he is a runner.

Thing is, he seems darn happy. But what dog isn't with fresh water and food?

Just FYI
-- The Dairy Queen Brownie Blizzard treat is topped with marshmallow, not whipped cream.

Nobody's perfect
My parents drove over to out house today.

My dad is thrilled shitless that my husband not only LIKES to talk about CB radios, but geek LOVES to play with them.

Today, my parents delivered my husband's early birthday present: a CB radio and antenna. My mother told me a few weeks ago that my dad INSISTED he buy us one before The Big Trip. Then, she called earlier this week and said they would bring it over this weekend, so my dad could install it.

My mother told me that my dad is bragging to everyone at work about his son-in-law. He's quite excited...not just that hubby is a good playmate, but my husband is incredibly INTELLIGENT, too.

As they prepared to leave, my slightly-tipsy dad stood in my driveway, looked around at our home and kids and said, "You know, Sunshine, I never knew you'd done so good. That makes me proud."

"Well, I have a great husband. He's the one to blame."

"No, you have really good kids. I wish I had been a better father. Your husband and you are a team; I saw him working with his son today and I hear Munchkin talk about you when she's over. Maybe if I'd been like that with your brothers more, things could be different with them."

I just shrugged. "They chose their path. I chose mine. They are nearly 40 years old, I think the statute of limitations on blaming you for their choices is well over. I made plenty of mistakes along the way, too, but my head is on pretty straight."

And if that wasn't shocker enough, my mother complimented me on my good housekeeping! Growing up, I was pretty sloppy/messy. Although I still have a few problems areas, like papers, my house is neat and smells nice.

It took me about 2 hours of labor to feel my house was acceptably clean. I am still pretty harsh on myself, and did much more than vacuum, dust, dishes and wipe down. As soon as I realized my behavior was becoming neurotic, I calmed down. The big tasks were done.

And I stepped down from shining the dining room chandelier.

Tips on saving gas and money
Thanks to the Net, tomorrow's "Gas Boycott" is gaining momentum.

Is it actually going to accomplish anything? No. Delaying a needed gas purchase by a day doesn't mean squat to oil companies. They won't need to have a Blue Light special because people will just fill up today or Thursday.

It is interesting that Bloomberg reseach shows oil mergers allowed by President Bush have contributed to the high prices.

Gas prices are outrageous, but we can't complain. We choose our vehicles. Needless to say, I practice MANY fuel-conserving rules.

It amazes me how many people choose to drive 70 mph in a 55-zone or 90mph on the highways. Then they bitch about gas prices. DUH! That type of stupidity wastes the liquid gold!

Personally, I think speed limits should be rolled back to 55 mph, but I know that will NEVER happen. Not only would oil lobbyists shut it down, but too many people are too stupid to WANT to drive "that slow."

I am big on multitasking my driving trips. Lists are compiled all week and shopping is done in one fell swoop on Saturday. If I need something during the week, I will stop on my way to/from work or ask hubby to pick it up on his way home.

Ironically, I find myself griping more about the cost of meat, especially beef...more specifically, hamburger. Thank goodness for the stockpile of venison in my freezer!

A few tips:
1. Buy a vehicle with better mileage and use it.
2. Drive the speed limit or under (without breaking laws.)
3. Keep all tires inflated properly.
4. Change oil and filters and tune-up on schedule.
5. Don't use the air conditioner, except when needed. (I have found that the faster I need to drive, the better it is on my mileage to use the air.)
6. Consolidate errands and/or run a few on your way home/to work.
7. Carpool or exercise (bike/walk) a few errands. Don't move the car when you are going from store to store at the local stripmall.
8. Watch for coupons at grocery stores, like Kroger and Meijer, for gas savings.

Shoe shopping
This is the first time in my ENTIRE life that I went sandal shopping.

With our month-long, out-West vacation just weeks away, I knew I desperately needed a pair or two of comfy, sturdy and attractive sandals. Leather preferred.

My browsing started at Payless Shoes. Good start, right? Unfortunately, the limited selection they had of casuals were clunky high heels (think Herman Munster) or backless sandals. BLAH!

Walmart was even worse. I'm hoping it's because Michigan doesn't have a long sandal season!

Not expecting much success, hubby and I hit Kmart this morning. PAY DIRT! They had AISLES of sandals! I picked out 5 styles and ended up buying 2 of them. Yep, one is leather.

Coolness level? Munchkin, just weeks away from being a "high schooler," has already salivated over my selections!

She's probably in her room right now brainstorming ways to call them her own, kinda like what she does with my shirts and shorts.

And I even got a king-size bed-in-a-bag ensemble for $36. It's just a 210-thread count, not as awesome as the 300-thread 100% cotten sateen sheet set hubby bought yesterday. He's so proud that I liked and praised his purchase. He's quite color-blind, so I know scary results.

He bought white.

Still not on the map
I received a distressed call from my mother this evening about 10:15.

My psycho sister had just phoned her to say she heard on the news that a tornado tore through my little town.

I assured my mother that nothing of the sort happened (or even came close!) and everything was fine. I teased how our town NEVER makes the news. Her panic subsided and I started making jokes.

"Hey, tell K.C. that she isn't getting her grubbies on my ruby slippers just yet!"
"With our luck, our town will only get ON a map if it gets a tornado to blow it OFF the map!"

Without sarcasm, I asked my mother to tell my sister "thank you" for her concern. It actually had a bit of sincerity, too. Odd as it sounds, I know it will PO my sister if she thinks I may portray her actions as caring.

I won't repeat what my mother said SHE wants to tell my sister for nearly giving her a heart attack!

(The newscast was repeated at 11 p.m. and it did NOT contain anything close to a reference to my little town or area. Must have been the voices in her head!)

::Fax Cover Sheets:: The Thursday Threesome
Onesome: Fax-- Do you have access to or use a fax machine at home? Just curious... . Yep, we have 2 fax machines...one is part of my early Christmas present from my inlaws.

Twosome: Cover-- Hey, summer's coming! What type of cover up do you use when you're out in the sun? Usually NOTHING, but this summer, since we are going out to Arizona and Vegas, etc., I will probably use 30-proof.

Threesome: Sheets-- 120 count or 180? This is hard to say today. Our new bed was, literally, just delivered and my plan is to get new sheets this weekend. I really want to try out jersey sheets, but we shall see. JCPenney is my starting point, but this set at Bed Bath & Beyond seems pretty nice, too. Wonder if anyone makes velour king-sized bed sheet sets?

When being bad is being good
About 6:45 this morning, Munchkin came into our bathroom and brushed her teeth in my sink, while I used Hubby's sink for the same chore.

Dakota, our favorite kitty, walked in and was greeted with, "Hi, Dakota-boy!"

My grey fleece robe was laying on the floor btwn Munchkin and me and he stopped on it. Glancing down, I realized he was in his pee position.

"DAKOTA! What are you doing?!!?" In my astonishment, I didn't holler this in an angry tone.

Then it hit me: uh-oh.

Sure enough, he didn't flinch. Instead, he stared right at me.

Uh-oh.

Moments later, Dakota slowly moved off my robe. And I saw the little pools of blood. U-T-I (urinary tract infection)

Munchkin immediately helped me secure our bedroom suite. The litter boxes, water dishes and other kitties were moved to the family room. Dakota, who seemed fine just two hours earlier, relaxed enough to lay down, so I called Gusto to let her know I would be late. She completely understood A Trip To The Vet was necessary.

Munchkin caught the bus and I comforted Dakota: wet food, fresh water and lotsa lovin'. This cat is SO good, he will even use a litter box sans litter (which meant I had a bloody urine sample to show Doc.)

I thanked Dakota for being bad. It probably saved his life!

P.S. Nearly 12 hours later, Dakota is his playful and sweet self after 2 doses of his Amoxicillin and a can of IVD Feline Dissolution Formula in Gravy. woohoo!

What do you say?
The other day, my mother told me that the gal who lived next to us when I was pregnant is dying from cervical cancer.

Although she was 3 years older, Angie and I were really good friends. We even worked together every Saturday at the pharmacy in town and we hung out occasionally.

In fact, she met her husband when we dragged prim and proper Margaret over to Canada one night. He and his friends bought our table a round of drinks, but since I was driving, vivacious Angie helped herself to mine while I nursed a Diet Coke. Then, he bought her roses.

Shortly after, I found out I was pregnant with Munchkin. Angie was in the throes of dating her new love, and of course, our paths forked.

As I type this, I am trying to come up with a nice way to contact her. It has been nearly a dozen years since we last spoke! Now, Angie has children...and she's dying.

I have a pretty, blank-inside card. I have cards with sentiments.

Dear God, what to say?

Ready for the World
What a BIZARRE day! I actually met a dog with my first name and chatted with a gal from Winnebago who shares my first name. I usually go YEARS without meeting anyone else with my BORING moniker.

Maybe to complete the trifecta, I need to go to the Outback tonight and see my name AGAIN?!!? teehee It is, after all, our 7th wedding anniversary!

How school districts can save money
1. Reduce the cost of mass mailings. So many school districts do NOT utilize the Internet for their ridiculous weekly (or TWICE-weekly, in our case) mass mailings for things like school lunch calendars, newsletters. Let parents sign up to receive them via e-mail or post them online and encourage parents who despise the junkmail to get on the list. This not only affects reduces postage, but also PAPER waste. (Our district even mails the student handbook, which costs over a dollar
2. Encourage school-based clubs, like book and hobby clubs, etc. Allow high schoolers to earn their volunteer credit while helping the kids.
3. Have a monthly Career Day at the school (especially work with the local chamber of commerce), instead of taking kids on all-day field trips to local amusement parks. The price of gas, bus drivers and insurance is quite steep for these jaunts.
4. Stop with the "team teaching." This may seem like a good idea, since more teachers are employed than necessary, but kids are pretty much kept in the same teams for years and do not know most of the kids in their grade who are in different teams.
5. Allow the parents' organizations to be creative with their fundraising. Instead of the same candy and gift wrap crap being sold by all students, allow art fairs, garage sales, students' skills, etc. to be the focus of potential money-making. Individual school or class projects will generate more response than boring same-ol'-same-ol!

Mother's Day
Hubby, Munchkin and I drove over to my parents for the day. Surprisingly, My sister didn't bother to visit my mother today. My mother never heard from either of my brothers. No call, no card, nothing.

We had gifts for my mother and took my parents out for a NICE dinner.

Where?

Ironically, it was at the same restaurant where, nearly 6 years ago, the saga of "My Parents Are Out Of Our Lives" began. Where my sister tried to fight me because I adhered to my dad's wishes that Munchkin NOT spend the night at their house.

It was silently symbolic.

Ah, now about The Gifts.

I bought my mother some Mexican-themed kitchen towels with matching hotpads, Wyler's Light Pink Lemonade, "Glorious Appearing" and a silly card (my mother laughed that it will PO my sister immensely.) My husband INSISTED on buying my mother a hanging plant, so we stopped at a little local nursery and he bought her a gorgeous hanging fuschia. She loved it!

And we all got hugs from my mother as we left this evening.

Hubby and I did not go to the chiropractor last night. I hurt WAY too much to let him touch me again and my husband's back problems are non-existant when he sleeps on my stepson's mattress (who isn't here until next weekend.)

Of course, today we went mattress shopping! That is going to be a HUGE decision, too. But anyway...

Lulu's Friday Five
1. Do you know anyone who shares your birthday? Nope, but my favorite teacher in high school was the day before mine.
2. Anyone famous? Nope, but Dr. Suess married on it!
3. Did you ever have a pinata for your birthday party? Nope.
4. Did you have clowns at a party? Did/do they scare you? Nope x 2.
5. Do you like wearing your birthday suit? I must...it's always on!

Friday, May 07, 2004

Friday Five
If today was your birthday...
1. What theme would adorn your party hat? Harry Potter. Can hardly wait for the new movie June 4!
2. What has been your sparkliest birthday gift ever? On my 30th birthday, Gusto gave me a party with lots of sparkly-eyed guests, but that night, hubby took Munchkin and me to dinner, then we had to go buy several DOZEN lightbulbs for our new house!
3. What is your favorite non-traditional cake flavor? Banana! mmm...Remember, Gusto?
4. Would you open a SINGLE present in the morning and save the rest for later? Sure! Lots of times, I get presents helter-skelter for a week. Waiting doesn't drive me nuts.
5. What restaurant would you choose for dinner? The Dorsey House

Luv ya, Lulu!

Are CHIROPRACTORS quacks?
Any input on chiropractic experiences or advice is much appreciated!

Last week, my husband's back went out and he could barely stand, so on Friday, I told him to go see a chiropractor.

He did and saw a slight improvement over the weekend.

Monday, I decided to go. Nothing major, but I do have some shoulder and lower back pain. I went to a chiropractor in 98 or 99 and saw great relief in just a few visits.

My first visit, I had to have Xrays. No biggie. I was immediately told I would need to come back in on Wednesday to go over the results and find out what was

Then, my neck and back were "adjusted." He is a "cracker," and some of his incessant pushing hurt my chest. But, I rationalized, things are probably out-of-whack and I probably needed it.

Last night, hubby and I went again. Hubby was doing much better...he slept on a real mattress Mon and Tues nights, instead of our waterbed. This was a piece of brilliant info that *I* mentioned: we have a waterbed. Strangely, HIS sleeping habits were never discussed, while mine were?

Hubby had his treatment and I was sent into a room to watch a video. Essentially, painkillers, therapy, surgery, etc. are BAD; chiropractic care is GOOD. Nothing was stated about lifestyle or even good posture or bending/lifting habits. The buzz words are subluxation, degneration and trauma.

Hubby came in and we chatted a bit. He told me the chiropractor recommended we buy this $2,500 mattress that has "adjustable firmness, because a firm mattress might be needed now, but a soft one needed later." It will last 25 years.

OK, that is outrageous and ICKY! A 25-year-old mattress?!!? ewwwwwww

The doctor came in shortly after and started going over my 4 Xrays. In a nutshell, my neck is curved the wrong way and my two lower vertebrae are wrongly aligned. I have several subluxations.

Prognosis isn't good: basically, in 20 years I will probably be confined to a wheelchair and unable to move my neck. I have a serious case of osteoarthritis starting.

I listened with amusement, but played along with mock seriousness. My hubby, on the other hand, fell for it. He was asking a million questions.

Treatment, we were told, will take at least a year of me going 3x a week for adjustments. In a year, I might be able to just come in for "preventative maintenance."

I specifically asked about special exercises/streches to help and that was dismissed. "Maybe in a few months."

I had my treatment and although it was not as excruciating as Monday, it still hurt. When I mentioned it, he said, "That pain is GOOD! It means the adjustment is going well. I have to force things to go the right way."

It might not be so bad, but he HAS to hear LOUD cracking sounds every time.

When we left, my lower back still ached and has continued. I did my evening walk and my right hip started throbbing.

So, I came home and started doing research online.
1. My reverse-curve neck "problem" seems to only show up on chiropractic sites.
2. It is amazing how many chiro sites have the SAME info on their pages, right down to identical text and photos!
3. Almost all problems need MONTHS of 2x-3x per week adjustment visits with post-years of "preventative maintenance" adjustments.

Our next appt is tomorrow. I have a list of questions going and will NOT have another adjustment until he convinces me he is NOT a quack!

Again, any input on chiropractic experiences or advice is much appreciated!

Celebrating the holidays!

1. Mexico or Spain? Spain. I'd love to go to Europe, it's been a dream of mine since I was a little girl.
2. Taco or burrito? Bean burrito, unless Munchkin is making corn tortillas!
3. Julio Iglesias or Ricky Martin? Julio DRIPS sex appeal!
4. Jennifer Lopez (JLo) or Selma Hayek? Selma is a GREAT actress, a great beauty and muy inteligente, tambien.
5. ¿dónde está el baño? o ¿dónde está la fiesta? Yo necesito el baño!

Sadly, right again!
I said it last week...Pandora's Box has been opened.

And MORE reports of abuse by U.S. troops, some including DEATH of detainees, are surfacing...seems like by the hour. The prisoners in Abu Ghraib are detainees, NOT CRIMINALS...they haven't been charged or convicted of ANY crime.

Even President Bush is trying to do damage control. Probably a smart thing, too, because if he ignores it, he is just as guilty as Saddam Hussein. (I believe our laws would call that being "an accessory to a crime.")

"On Capitol Hill, angry lawmakers -- some reliable Republican allies of the Bush administration -- demanded that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld appear at a public hearing to explain how American jailers could have been allowed to sadistically abuse Iraqi prisoners." -- The Miami Herald

Yeah, don't forget to ask him how our criminal troops were stupid enough to take PICTURES, too! Who does NOT know that EVERYTHING ends up on the Net?

Let's Go Crazy!
Such promise: Prince is back in the mainstream news. woohoo! I love that guy!

Then, five paragraphs from the article's end, we find out he's gone Witness...and I don't mean witness protection program!

Not completely unexpected since, supposedly, Prince lived in the purple house down the lake from my mother's wacky brother...

Stickin' around Dodge...
Last night, my husband took me to his new chiropractor. He said it would help him take his mind off his back pain, so I let him drive my Jeep, "my girl."

WHY DO I DO THAT?!!?

After my impressive solo performance of "Snap Crackle Pop!", we headed to the grocery store a few blocks away to expand his meager dinner choices. Men just don't understand that a batch of brownies CAN be a fulfilling meal.

Five bags later, we walked back to my Jeep and I noticed one tire looked low. Due to my husband's gimpness, I forgot to gauge it when we got home.

This morning, it was flat. COMPLETELY flat. Less-than-10#-of-air-so-I-ain't-going-anywhere-FLAT.

Sigh..."my girl" NEVER comes away unscathed when I let him sit behind her wheel. Their relationship is like Wyle E. Coyote and Roadrunner. And he is NOT Roadrunner!

Of course, my husband drove his Excursion to work. And he also took the keys to his Subaru, too. And I don't have a motorcycle license. (The van isn't currently insured, so that's not an option.)

Via Nextel, my husband suggested I use our air compressor to refill the tire. "Maybe it's a slow leak." Funny, EVERYBODY knows I'm pretty obsessive about gas mileage...and she's been just dandy. Still, I sincerely tried, but darn compressor hates everybody!

Just for kicks, I checked the tire. LA LA LA.

"Hey, honey, I'M A GENIUS! I know what's wrong with my tire!"

"Oh, realllllly? Besides it's losing air, what's wrong with your tire?" He's easily amused by my mechanical theories, which tend to be quite pathetic.

"My tire tread is now accessorized with a large, shiny silver bolt." HA! Take that mechanic-boy!

"No kidding! Glad you don't have to go anywhere today. I'll plug it when I get home tonight."

"Actually, I do need to get the hell-outta-Dodge, buddy-boy," LONG PAUSE, "but I planned on walking to the post office anyway!"

My job
The Port Huron Times Herald came up with a new weekly feature: I Love My Job. Sounds pretty interesting!
Name: "Sunshine"
Age: 33
Residence: Michigan
Job: Personal assistant to an incredibly freelance journalist
So, what do you do? What's a typical day like? Making/taking calls, eating peanut M&Ms, Internet research, chugging Diet Coke, brainstorming, ordering up lunch, typing/coding, gossiping, etc. Of course, it can change at a moment's notice and we just go with the flow.
What kind of training or education did you need? Strong communication skills and the ability to go with the flow.
What don't people understand about your job? Most people fail to comprehend that just because my boss has a disability does NOT mean I am her "caretaker" or nurse.
What do you like most about your job? My kind, patient, understanding and amazingly intelligent boss. If I didn't love her so much and find my job fulfilling, the 50-mile commute each way would have ended things in 2000.
It can't be all fun, so what would you change about your job? I hate it when Gusto's Dad finds it necessary that we hear Rush and Dr. Laura's ramblings on the radio down the hall! lolol
OK, fill-in-the-blank time. If I weren't a ___, I'd be a ___.
If I weren't a personal assistant, I'd be a dog walker.
