IMHO, it is a GREAT idea! Smoking cigarettes and drinking liquor are OPTIONAL...you don't want to pay such a tax, then you DON'T buy cigs or liquor. Pretty simple.
Some people are saying they should tax junk food or fast food, but there is NOT an intelligent correlation btwn a food tax and a sin tax. People NEED to eat food (and prepared foods--those in restaurants--already fall under the 6% state tax), but cigs and liquor aren't sustinence. Both of these vices are illegal for ANYONE under 18 to purchase here.
Additionally, a food tax would require school kids to pay up in their lunch line...even kids on reduced lunches!
And YES, these tobacco and liquor tax increases DO affect me, since my husband smokes occasionally, chews daily and beer is bought weekly. Sunshine - Walking on Sunshine -
